Carbon steel screws

Carbon steel is a versatile material used for making a wide array of screws that serve as vital fasteners in countless applications. Different screw types have evolved for specific uses, taking advantage of carbon steel's strength, machinability, and low cost. Common carbon steel screw varieties include self-tapping, self-drilling, T17 timber, and resistant head.

Self-tapping screws have threads that cut into the material as they are driven in, creating internal threads for securing into materials like plastics, sheet metal, or wood

Self-drilling screws combine drilling and tapping into one operation, fully eliminating any pilot hole requirement. Self-drilling screws provide fast assembly of overlapped metal sheets or other materials up to moderate thicknesses.

T17 screws are designed specifically for fastening into wood materials. They have a thinner shank and tapered shape for reducing wood splitting while providing holding power.  T17s are commonly used in woodworking and construction projects.

Resistant screws have special head treatments to withstand specific exposure conditions. A range of coatings and surface treatments have been developed to make carbon steel screws rust-resistant for use in outdoor, marine, and other demanding settings.

With the proper screw selection for the materials and conditions at hand, carbon steel screws provide an indispensable, cost-effective fastening solution.

Carbon Steel Technical Details
Types Carbon content ANSI hardness Level Application character
low-carbon steel 0.05-0.3% C1010 4.8 Used for general screws relatively low tensile strength
C1018 4.8 Used for Carburized screws or Thin screws with M4.0 diameter or less
C1022 5.8 -
Medium-carbon steel 0.3-0.6% C1045 8.8 - good wear resistance
35ACR 10.9 Used for thin screws with M4.0 diameter or less
40ACR 10.9 Used for M4~M10 diameter screws
High-carbon steel 0.6-1.0% -   - extremely strong yet more brittle
high wear resistance
Ultra-high-carbon steel 1.25-2.0% -   - can be tempered to great hardness
Used for special purposes
